Happy Global Wellness Day! Is Your Tech Working For or Against You?

June 13, 2025

Today is Global Wellness Day. As such, we wanted to invite you to consider a few ways to prioritize not just your mental and physical well-being, but your digital well-being as well. After all, technology is what keeps us connected to the world at large… and if we don’t approach it appropriately, it can create some challenges that we should all want to avoid.

Let’s talk about some simple best practices that can help promote workplace wellness and a healthier balance in our lives.

First, Consider Your Ergonomics

Technology has deeply infiltrated both how we work and how we live, with many of us spending our hours in front of screens. All this time can often leave us stiff and sore, with odd pains flaring up.

Fortunately, there are some ways to help minimize, if not outright eliminate, these sensations. By adjusting your workplace furniture and peripherals—from the height of your chair to the position of your monitors, mouse, and keyboard—you can encourage yourself to maintain an improved posture and ultimately feel better at the end of the day.

Not only does this help you feel better, but it also eliminates a very impactful workplace distraction.

Second, Put a Cap on Your Notifications

Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.

Notifications, as helpful as they can be at times, are also frequently an irritating stressor and distraction from your essential responsibilities. Periodically, it helps to audit the notifications you have activated to reduce interruptions. If not, consider activating focus mode or Do Not Disturb to put a hold on them.

It can also be helpful to set aside specific times to actively check your notifications in bulk, rather than checking them individually as they arrive.

Third, Take a Break!

In addition to giving yourself a moment or two to wind down, clear your thoughts, and refocus, stepping away from your screens can help reduce the eye strain you may experience.

Fortunately, it doesn’t take much. Try to follow the 20/20/20 rule… Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Don’t Think that Global Wellness Day is the Only Day to Focus on Workplace Wellness

Instead, think of it as a reason to start longer-term wellness initiatives… particularly those that can help us manage our relationship with technology at home and in the workplace. We’re here to help businesses in Northern Virginia embrace and optimize the many ways IT can promote their team’s overall wellness by better supporting their workplace activities.

The Business Reality of Hardware Lifecycles
Most business owners treat their office computers like breakroom microwaves: they expect them to work until they physically stop turning on. It’s a logical approach for a toaster, but in the professional world, a computer becomes "old" long before it actually breaks.

Why Password Length is More Important Than Complexity
With automated threats on the rise and taking over the cyberthreat landscape, you need as many ways to stay safe online as possible. Naturally, one of the most talked about topics is login security. There’s a lot of good password advice out there, but the most helpful piece isn’t repeated often enough: just make it longer.

How to Manage BYOD (Without the Headache)
With smartphones as accessible as they are, it’s no small wonder how company-only policies have all but faded into obscurity in the workplace. Whether you allow it or not, you can bet that your team is using their smartphones to get work done, whether it’s checking email from their couch or sending you a quick DM. In other words, you need a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, as it is practically the new accepted standard.
