Manage Your Time Better and See How It Improves Your Performance

Manage Your Time Better and See How It Improves Your Performance

March 15, 2025

Running a small business sometimes feels like a never-ending juggling act. One minute, you're answering emails, the next, you're dealing with customer requests, and before you know it, the day's over, and your to-do list is somehow longer than when you started. The good news is that you don’t need to clone yourself to make your business work. You just need a disciplined plan to manage your time.

Start With a Game Plan

With so many people and responsibilities pulling you in every direction, it’s important that you have a plan if you want to completely tackle everything thrown your way each day. Sure, you could just improvise, but you will find that tactic will cause more trouble than sitting down and strategizing how to manage your time effectively. To do this best, you’ll want to spend a few minutes at the end of each day mapping out what you need to tackle tomorrow. Prioritize the most important stuff first.

Time Block Like a Boss

Ever feel like you’re bouncing from one task to another without actually finishing anything? That’s where time blocking comes in. Set specific blocks of time for tasks like answering emails, working on projects, and even taking breaks. This stops the litany of small tasks you have to put your attention to from hijacking your entire day.

Delegate, Delegate, Delegate

Many small business owners think they have to do everything themselves. That’s a fast track to burnout. If there’s something you can outsource—like bookkeeping, social media, or any of the admin work that you find tedious—do it. Every business owner needs to learn to trust their team or hire competent and reputable freelancers to handle the things that eat up too much of their time.

Have a System for Email

Emails can be really sneaky. They seem harmless but miss a couple of days and it can eat up hours. If you’re constantly checking them, longer.

If you schedule two or three specific times to check and respond to emails, you won’t be wasting more time than necessary. Everything else can wait.

Use Technology to Your Advantage

There’s an app for everything these days, and small business owners should take full advantage. Digital collaboration has never been better. Today, there are applications designed to connect every person and every project going in your business. Take advantage of them. Learn the software and find more ways that you can better manage your business.

Set Boundaries

If you answer emails at midnight or take work calls on Sundays, you’re setting the expectation that you’re always available. Think about all the people that take up your time.  Instead, set clear business hours and stick to them. Your sanity will thank you.

Review and Adjust

Time management needs to have some flexibility. Reassess how you spend your time and how it affects your business and reprioritize tasks, but be kind to yourself. Being on the grind too much can really do you mental and physical harm.

Align Business Goals with IT Procurement with a vCIO
If you had to be honest with yourself, does your technology strategy revolve around your business’ plans, or is it tied more closely to your inevitable hardware failures? Many businesses still operate in the break-fix sense. When a laptop breaks, they replace it… but this reactive spending is costing your business in the long run, and it all but ensures you’re two steps behind. To stay competitive, you need tech goals that align with your business, supported by a Virtual Chief Information Officer who understands your business inside and out.

Fueling the Machine: The Strategic Art of Data Refinement
For the modern enterprise, deploying artificial intelligence is less about buying a shiny new engine and more about high-performance fuel. AI thrives on information; if that input is fragmented or disorganized, your investment is essentially trying to navigate a fog with a broken compass.

How Managed Service Models Can Stabilize Your Operational Budget
Is the “break-fix” cycle of IT quietly (or not so quietly) draining your company’s annual profit? Many businesses operate from the perspective that if the computer is running, it’s doing the job and isn’t costing the business anything. This is a fallacy, and one that could be costing your business. In truth, this silent leak could be costing your business thousands in billable hours, emergency repair premiums, and staff frustration.
