Four Simple Defenses Against Modern Corporate Scams

Four Simple Defenses Against Modern Corporate Scams

September 23, 2026

It feels like every message your team receives is an attempt to steal money or compromise your network. Scammers target organizations constantly with increasingly refined tactics, making it impossible to stop bad actors from sending fraudulent requests. Are you out of luck? No. You can implement straightforward habits to protect your operation.

Establish a Two-Channel Verification Rule

Impersonation is an incredibly common method used in corporate fraud. Attackers frequently pretend to be vendors, financial institutions, or executives within your own company. What happens when an employee blindly trusts an urgent request for a wire transfer? The money disappears.

If you receive an email requesting a change to banking details or an urgent payment, never respond directly to that message. Verify the request using a separate communication channel. Call the sender using a phone number saved in your internal directory, or printed on a verified physical invoice. Verifying payment requests through an independent medium stops impersonation attempts immediately. Problem solved.

Stop Saving Passwords in Your Web Browser

Managing dozens of unique login credentials without assistance is difficult. However, storing passwords directly inside web browsers leaves sensitive business credentials vulnerable to credential-stealing malware.

Transition your organization to a dedicated enterprise password manager and tell your web browser to stop remembering your passwords. Are web browsers safe for your passwords? Not even a little. They offer convenience at the cost of your security. Dedicated password managers, on the other hand, store credentials behind zero-knowledge encryption and mandate multi-factor authentication.

To remove saved passwords in your browser:

  • In Google Chrome - Click the three-dot icon on the top right of your browser window and select Passwords and Autofill > Google Password Manager. From here, you can manage and delete the passwords that Google Chrome has saved for you.
  • In Microsoft Edge - Select Settings and go to Privacy, Search, and Services. Then scroll down to Clear Browsing Data. Click Choose what to clear, then select only passwords. Set the time range to All Time, then click Clear Now to delete all saved passwords.

Enforce a Mandatory Cooldown Period

Fraudulent communications rely heavily on artificially created urgency. Attackers create pressure by threatening legal action, claiming account termination is imminent, or demanding immediate invoice settlements.

Force a mandatory five-minute cooldown period whenever a message demands immediate action or creates sudden pressure. Step away from your screen before taking action. When you re-examine the message with a clear mind, technical inconsistencies become obvious. Mismatched sender addresses, minor domain misspellings, and unusual payment demands will stand out. That is how you break the illusion.

Remove the Fear of Reporting Mistakes

Employees often hesitate to report clicking a suspicious link or entering credentials on an untrusted page due to fear of disciplinary action. When your staff stays silent out of fear, bad actors gain hours or days to move across your network undetected.

Create an environment that encourages reporting security mistakes immediately. Scammers are professionals, and even the best of us can fall for a sophisticated trap. Prompt reporting allows your IT team to revoke compromised credentials and isolate threats before significant damage occurs. Empathy is a technical necessity.

Protecting an endpoint is not just a technical burden; it is a shared responsibility to safeguard colleagues, clients, and partners. Effective cybersecurity does not require restrictive measures that halt daily operations. It requires strong habits, clear procedures, and the right security tools.

A Zero Trust Policy Is a Great Way to Prioritize Security
Running a business is hard enough without having to think about cybersecurity. Your business faces existential threats from cyberattacks every day it’s operational, as data breaches truly do have the power to bring your business down if you’re not prepared for the fallout. A zero trust approach can help to mitigate many of the risks that come from cybersecurity threats, and it’s all thanks to the principle of least permission.
