The Three Most Common Printer Problems

The Three Most Common Printer Problems

November 23, 2024

The printer is a technology we can’t escape. In many ways, we can't live without them, but they sure know how to drive us crazy. You’d think printing would be simple, but when issues pop up, it’s easy to wonder why printers are so unreliable. Here are the main reasons printers tend to mess up, as most problems fall into one of these three categories. Let’s take a look at them:

Software Glitches

Printers aren’t just hardware—they rely on software, called drivers, to communicate with your computer. Drivers help your computer understand what the printer needs to do. But here’s the catch: drivers can get outdated or stop working well after your computer updates. If your printer suddenly doesn’t work, it could be because its drivers need an update.

Paper and Ink Issues

Printer companies actually make a lot of their money from selling ink refills rather than just the printers themselves. Ink and paper are key to printing, but they can also be sources of trouble. Using the wrong paper size or type or even loading paper slightly off can cause jams. The printer’s rollers might also get blocked or worn out over time, which causes more problems.

Connection Problems from Hiding the Printer Away

Printers can be noisy, which makes it tempting to tuck them out of sight—like in a cabinet or under a desk. But this can cause issues with their wireless connection. When the printer is hidden, Wi-Fi signals may struggle to reach it, causing printing interruptions. It’s best to place the printer somewhere with a clear signal and keep it in a more open space.
