If your new tools focus more on surveillance than support, you risk alienating your best talent. When employees feel like they are being monitored under a microscope rather than empowered to work, they stop innovating and start looking busy.

Ask yourself, “Does this tool remove an obstacle, or does it just add another hoop for my team to jump through?”

Focus on the Metrics That Matter

Success isn't measured by how many hours an employee spends in their inbox or how many clicks they make. It’s measured by impact. For example:

  • Wrong KPIs - Inbox activity, login times, software usage stats.
  • Right KPIs - Customer satisfaction scores, project completion rates, and revenue growth.

Shift your focus from monitoring activity to measuring outcomes. Your IT strategy should support the latter without suffocating the former.

Before making your next IT investment, follow these three rules:

Eliminate Redundancy

Unless it’s a data backup, you don't need two tools that do the same thing.

Quantify the Impact

If you can’t predict a specific, measurable improvement to your bottom line, hold off on the purchase.

Prioritize Integration

Ensure your tools talk to each other so your data isn't trapped in silos.
